It’s always so nice when you hear about a youngster that you knew of years ago now doing well as a grown up. I am referring to Soleil Moon Frye, also known as Punky Brewster from the hit TV show in the 80s.

Soleil and her business partner, Kara Nortman, a former executive with IAC, have raised new funding for Moonfrye, a startup aimed at bringing creative Do-It-Yourself (DIY) and interactive experiences to children and parents. The two women just raised $2.5 million in funding led by GRP Partners with participation from Greycroft, Daher Capital, and Google Ventures.

Punky Brewster was a show about a girl named Penelope “Punky” Brewster. Punky and her dog Brandon were abandoned in a supermarket by her mother. She doesn’t want to stay in an orphanage so she befriends Henry Warnimont who adopts her.

In the last few years, Moon Frye has been devoted to working on her online and social community called Moonfrye.com for parents and children. Moon Frye also has an eco-friendly baby store in Los Angeles, designed a product line for Target, and authored two books oriented towards parents, “Happy Chaos” and “Let’s Get This Party Started.”

Moon Frye and Nortman are mothers of young children. Details of their business haven’t been spelled out, but It does have a huge do-it-yourself, arts-and-crafts component.

Good luck, Punky. We are rooting for you.

  1. There is a real Punky Brewster. Brewster was already married to Kerry W. Rutledge. The TV’s Punky Brewster is Jewish, while the real Punky Brewster is a gentile. Punky is a direct descendant of William Brewster, the Mayflower descendant. William will be thrilled today by the name of the character Punky Brewster.
